LADY MACBETH
Macbeth’s wife, a deeply ambitious woman who desires
for position and power. Early in the play as Lady Macbeth urges her husband to
kill Duncan and seize the crown she seems to be the stronger and more cold-blooded
of the two. Although after the violence begins, Lady Macbeth falls victim to
guilt and madness to an even greater degree than her husband. Her integrity
affects her to such an amount that she eventually commits suicide. Remarkably,
she and Macbeth are seen as being extremely in love, and many of Lady Macbeth’s
speeches indicate that her influence over her husband is predominantly sexual.
Their combined unfriendliness from the world, induced by their partnership in
crime, seems to reinforce the affection that they feel towards each other. Read an in-depth analysis of Lady Macbeth.
