MACBETH
Macbeth a Scottish general and the thane of
Glamis, is led to wicked thoughts by the predictions of the three witches,
especially after their prophecy that he will be made thane of Cawdor comes
true. Macbeth is a courageous soldier and a powerful man, although he is not an
honourable one. He is easily drawn into murder to fulfil his ambitions to the
throne, and once his first crime has been committed and is crowned King of
Scotland, he embarks on further murders with increasing ease. Macbeth lacks the
skills necessary to rule without being a tyrant and therefore proves himself
better suited to the battlefield than to political intrigue. His answer to
every problem is violence and murder. Macbeth is not comfortable in his role as
a criminal and is unable to tolerate the psychological consequences of his violence. Read an in-depth analysis of Macbeth.
